How to Get Your Teeth Pregnancy Ready
Does pregnancy damage teeth? That’s a question many of our patients ask us when preparing to welcome a new addition to their families. At Highlight Family Dentistry, we believe that keeping your oral health in tip-top shape is integral to a healthy pregnancy. We are committed to providing quality dental services through our “Pregnancy Dentistry Program” to help you enjoy a healthy smile before, during, and after your pregnancy. You can always count on us for exceptional care and service.
Why Do Oral Health Problems Develop During Pregnancy?
There are many reasons a pregnancy can lead to oral health problems. This magical time can result in a hormone imbalance, leading to the swelling of the gums. Food can get stuck under the inflamed gums, causing irritation and leading to gum disease, a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis.
Pregnancy is notorious for morning sickness and frequent vomiting, resulting in repeated, prolonged exposure of the teeth to stomach acid. That can lead to tooth enamel erosion, tooth decay, and sensitivity. Food cravings can also be problematic. Constant snacking on sugary foods and grazing can increase the risk of tooth decay and cavities.
How to Get Your Teeth Pregnancy Ready
If you’re in a family planning or hormonal treatment phase, we recommend scheduling a consultation with your trusted team at Highlight Family Dentistry.
Here’s a look at our three-step pregnancy program:
Step 1: Our team will evaluate every aspect of your oral health and recommend any preventive or restorative treatments needed to get your smile pregnancy ready.
Step 2: If you are currently in the planning phase, we’ll conduct a regular or deep cleaning, as needed, and will repair any damage to your teeth. We’ll also provide you with at-home care instructions and schedule follow-up appointments. If you’re already pregnant, we’ll clean your teeth and only perform emergency dental treatments with clearance from your Ob/Gyn.
Step 3: We typically schedule routine dental exams and cleanings every six months. However, we recommend dental cleanings every three months during pregnancy. Your insurance may not cover the additional visits, which is why we keep their costs minimal.
Home Oral Health Care Before, During, and After Pregnancy
It is vital that you maintain a meticulous oral hygiene regimen at home. That includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Make sure to floss daily to remove plaque and debris from those hard-to-reach areas between your teeth.
We advise pregnant women not to brush their teeth right after vomiting because that can result in tooth enamel erosion. Use mouthwash instead. Wait at least 30 minutes before you brush your teeth. If you have any questions or concerns, make sure to let our team know. We’re always here for you and are committed to supporting your oral health every step of the way.
