What Can You Expect After a Tooth Extraction?
At Highlight Family Dentistry, our priority is to save natural teeth whenever possible and restore healthy, beautiful smiles. However, there are situations that may necessitate extracting one or more teeth that are beyond repair or compromising your oral health. Our skilled dentists and team are dedicated to providing exceptional care with a gentle, compassionate touch to ensure you have the best possible patient experience.
Why Would a Tooth Need to Be Extracted?
The following are some of the reasons we may need to extract one or more of your teeth:
- Irreparable Tooth Damage: We may need to extract teeth damaged beyond repair with restorative treatments or root canal therapy due to deep decay, trauma, advanced periodontal disease, or severe infections.
- Fractured Tooth or Root: Beyond deep decay or trauma, a tooth may have a severe fracture extending below the gum line or into the root, making it irreparable and potentially leading to complications, including persistent pain and infection.
- Orthodontic Treatment Plan: We may recommend selective tooth extractions to create space for your teeth to move into proper alignment or correct crowding as a component of an orthodontic treatment plan.
- Preparation for Dentures or Partials: Sometimes, we may need to extract a tooth or multiple failing teeth to create a more stable and comfortable foundation for a new full or partial denture, ensuring the best possible fit and function.
- Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth are notorious for causing complications, such as being impacted, infected, decayed, or painful, which is why they often need to be extracted to safeguard your oral health.
What Can You Expect After Tooth Extraction?
After extracting one or more of your teeth, we will provide you with care instructions to promote healing and recovery. Make sure to bite down firmly on the gauze we place to control bleeding and to encourage a blood clot to form in the extracted tooth’s socket. Use cold compresses to minimize swelling and take the prescribed pain-relief medication, as needed, to manage any discomfort. The good news is that most patients experience minimal discomfort as the area heals.
It’s important to avoid activities that can dislodge the blood clot forming in your socket for at least 48 hours to prevent a painful complication known as dry socket. These include drinking through a straw, spitting, vigorous rinsing, or smoking. Make sure to stick to soft foods and avoid anything acidic, spicy, or hot for the first few days.
After the first day, you’ll need to rinse gently with lukewarm salt water 2-3 times a day to keep the area clean and support healing. Continue brushing and flossing as usual while avoiding the extraction site. Please contact our Hutto practice to speak with one of our friendly team members if you have any questions or concerns in the days following your tooth extraction.
